The 4 P's of my Favorite Movie

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the blog. As we get more into the year, it is time to begin thinking about topics and themes for my upcoming short film.

One theme that I really enjoy is psychological thrillers and stalker films. I used this genre as inspiration for my film opening last year. This year, however, I would like to take a different approach and have the focal point around my short film be twisted endings. Most films have a typical "happy ending," but what I would like to do is distort this by establishing an ending that is unpredictable. One movie that has really inspired me and has a relatively unexpected ending is La La Land. One scene in particular that inspired me is the ending scene. For this scene, I am going to list the 4 p's. which are the people, place, picture, and plot. See below for the scene!

People

This scene includes two of the main characters and only focuses on them throughout. This scene shows what would have happened if both of these characters stayed together instead of splitting. I feel like what really makes this scene is the chemistry behind the two players and their history with each other. You can really see how they both felt in those moments, as the old memories flooded, and what their potential future could have been. It really captures a feeling of passion between the two characters that really helps to complete the scene.

Place

This scene takes place in a jazz club. The club is a focal point throughout the movie because Sebastian wants to stay and fulfill his dream of opening his own jazz club, whereas Mia wants to travel and pursue her acting career. This difference in futures is what ultimately caused their split. It comes full circle when Mia, a now famous actor, walks into Seb's, a jazz club run by Sebastian, years after they both went pursuing their dream. It really shows a theme that is not commonly shown in romance movies and inspires me to include a more raw and less fairytale-like ending in my short film.

Picture

During the duration of the scene, very careful attention is paid to the mise-en-scene and cinematography. Jump cuts are included, going back and forth between the two characters. The lights around them dim and draw focus on only the two of them in the crowd. It transitions into the scene where they first meet, but instead of Sebastian ignoring her like the scene is at the beginning, they embrace each other as the music plays. It quickly progresses into a series of scenes, which are shown in different endings and the most traditional "happy ending."

Plot

Given this is a romance movie, it is about love between two people. But what distinguishes it is the attention to self as well. They ultimately split up to pursue two different paths, and the love that was established throughout the movie diminishes until they both have almost forgotten about each other. This ending ties everything together and shows the unexpected ending in which, rather than staying together, tied up by each other's love, they go their own ways for their own good. This scene shows that they could have had a life together if things had ended differently, but it didn't.
