Why I like what I like

Hello, and welcome back to another blog post. Today, I will discuss some of my favorite genres and why I like them. My tastes and inspiration for my upcoming film have significantly changed from what inspired my film opening last year.

What is/are my favorite genre or genres?  What genre do I plan to work in for my film?

The three genres I have been finding particularly interesting are romance, drama, and adventure. I plan on using an adventure-drama genre with a twisted ending for my short film. Instead of displaying this in a romantic way, with a man-vs-man struggle, I would like to display some sort of internal struggle that the main character faces. One aspect I would like to incorporate is the use of classical and jazz music. Like the clip I will be talking about below, I would like to include a musical aspect during the climax of my short film. Music in itself can tell a story, and this helps to complement the actions and raise the tension in the scene.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes                                              La La Land

Why are these my favorites?

As I mentioned in my last blog post, my favorite part of La La Land isn't the romance aspect alone but also the lack of predictability and deterrence from the classic "happy" ending. This is my favorite genre because it feels like real life, compared to some movies and shows in which the impossible happens. This establishes a sense of comfort in me, with the notion that the best outcome doesn't always happen.

The Scene shown below is from "Why Women Kill," a show that incorporates three different stories of people who used to live in a particular house. Each one has its own story, but the topics of passion, love, and adventure stay prevalent throughout. During the Climax, which is the scene shown below, everything unravels, and a person from each story dies. It all takes place in the same house but during different time periods. The big idea is what love can do to a person, and shows it in three different ways. One kills out of hate, the second one out of love, and the last one out of jealousy. The editing and camera work during this scene show all the people at the same time but in their own story. This helps to contrast each story by displaying them all. The non-diegetic music is a classic tango song and has a build-up, climax, and resolution. This helps to show the stages of the scene and helps the audience to stay engaged in the scene. A factor of mise-en-scene is the weapon on which each is murdered. One with a needle, one with a gun, and one with a knife. This also helps to establish the different motives of the character. It all comes together to create an unexpected ending and tie the story together.
