Hello everyone! We are at the stage in the year where I began to plan and execute my short film. I have been brainstorming, and I am coming up with ideas!
In a previous blog, I mentioned the 4 P's (People, Place, Picture, Plot) I took inspiration from various films.
People: For the people in my short film, I would like one or two main characters and some type of narrator who comes in toward the end and has a role in the film. Like in series of unfortunate events, the narrator Lemony Snicket, is visible throughout the show, but is not seen by the other characters, and his role in the show is slowly developed, and it is tied together toward the end. I would also like to have a narrator, or sort of person not directly shown in the story, but has a role in the short film. See below for an example of an unseen character.
Place: For the location of my short film, I would like to utilize various places. In my music video, I used a unique outdoor area, and I was able to capture it by using a drone. The emptiness of the area adds meaning and complexity to the scenes that I am filming. Adding on to this, I would like to utilize other nature aspects, and hopefully have a scene outside in
which it is raining. This may be hard to get due to the unpredictable weather. But overall, I want more outdoor places for my short film.
Picture: Piggybacking off the concept of being in nature, I want the picture to help show the personalities of the different characters, and establish a line-of-reasoning for the events shown in the short-film. With factors of mise-en-scene, like different colored clothing, accessories, and more, I will be able to foreshadow the characters, and this will also help to establish the twisted ending I would like to have.
Plot: The plot is a factor that I am still debating, I would like to have some sort of mystery, or struggle faced by the characters. One of the ideas that I am debating is having it be a murder story. This is very common theme, however, I feel like I establish a story in which an unseen narrator is included. Another possible idea that I have is starting with
Opening Scene: I would start it in media res, with someone listening to music. A person is running leisurely, and they stumble across something that lures them in, and as they see it, they scream, and it cuts to a normal scene like waking up. It will set up the story, and I will develop the story, and come back to the time toward the end, and tie it together, with the twisted ending.
